A city loved by movie stars, from Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor in the old days, to Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Beyonce, and Cristiano Ronaldo, always has a touch of glamour and a pinch of stardust. In the past decade the entire city, including its legendary walls, was home to blockbusters, from Robin Hood movies or the last episode of Star Wars, to one of the most popular series in the world – Game of Thrones, thanks to which tens of thousands of visitors from all over the world come every year to learn about all the secrets of King’s Landing.

And yet, just a walk along Stradun, Prijeko, or Ulica od puča, and you can already feel the locals’ pulse. From walking and shopping in the traditional green placa (green market), where you can buy locally-grown fruit and vegetables – or feed the city’s pigeons at high noon, to walking along the Porporela breakwater or the old city port – you are already entering into the real, Dubrovnik, “pomalo” (slow) way of life.

The main tourist season lasts a full nine months during which, apart from the most luxurious hotels, you may visit some exclusive restaurants too, among which some have been awarded a Michelin star. Every guest can also enjoy the rich culture, such as the Maritime Museum, the Ethnographic Museum (Rupe), or the Rector’s Palace, where you can take a peek into the everyday medieval life of the Republic of Ragusa. Did you know that the Republic introduced the world’s first quarantine in Lazaret? If you would like to hear some marvelous music or see some amazing acting, go to one of the numerous concerts or theater plays, mostly taking place in the historic fortresses or palaces, so the entire city has a lively epithet of “Stage under the stars”.

There are many beaches, and among them, Banje beach, situated in front of the very walls, was named one of the most beautiful world beaches. However, that is far from all, as more beautiful nature awaits if you step on board a small boat and head to Lokrum island and immerse yourself in gardens and Austrian emperors’ parks. You can also take a cable car to Srđ, a hill giving you the most stunning view of the entire Dubrovnik riviera! Romantic sunsets here are immensely popular and for several decades couples from all over the world have come to Dubrovnik to say their I do – Yes I do in Du!

There is no shortage of things to do in winter either. For instance, the traditional “kolenda”, during which the entire City toasts to Christmas in song and greets the holidays, or the Carnival, or the patron saint’s feast – Festa Sv. Vlaha (St. Blaise’s Feast). During the Feast, tens of thousands of visitors from all over Croatia and the surrounding countries come to Dubrovnik, often clad in traditional costumes of their region and so make the most wonderful winter postcard!

When you wish to take a break from the old city, you can take a walk along Lapad or Gruž, the city neighborhoods which have marinas and small ports and are ideal for yacht people and all those who love and live the sea.

The famous Irish playwright once said after his vacation in Dubrovnik: “The people and hospitable, funny and friendly. Every town is a painting, every girl a movie star. Come quickly before they get to know us: it is too good to last.” The beauty still stands though, and it is difficult to describe it, you can only experience it!

Now that we tried to describe it is time to try and experience it and we’ll tell you the best way to do it. So let us paint you a little picture: You are lying on a sunbed reading a book, lounging on the sundeck, sitting in a jacuzzi, or simply enjoying your after-lunch cocktail on the yacht you chartered. You lift your head up and there it is: the magnificent Dubrovnik, surrounded by its walls. It is really a special sight and it is not to be missed. It is one thing to be in the middle of the happening and experiencing it up close but there is something peculiar to see it overall, from afar. To soak it all in at once.
