When you feel like stretching your sea legs on your luxury yacht charter to be guided by the wind and the two-wheeled power of a bicycle, there is no better place in Croatia than Dalmatia to go for a ride.

We’re bringing you some of the region’s best cycling routes to fully embrace Dalmatia's beauty on land, regardless of whether you’re an experienced mountain biker or recreational rider of any age.

Biokovo Mountain

One of the paths on Mountain Biokovo

Let’s start with the hardest. The breathtaking Biokovo Mountain emerges from the sea and is a stunning backdrop to the Makarska Riviera. It also boasts the second-highest peak in Croatia. Not for the faint-hearted, advanced riders can take the trail up to the top of Sveti Jure for a challenging and thrilling adventure at 1762 meters above sea level. While you definitely need the right bike to be in good shape to master these steep ascents and descents, the reward at the top offers an incredible view of the islands and the interior. Don’t forget to explore the Biokovo Nature Park while there, with a stellar skywalk, educational trails for hikers, and botanical gardens.

Krka National Park

Krka's Waterfall

Because your sailing route will likely stop at Krka National Park, you’ll be pleased to know that this natural gem is also a haven for cyclists! Krka offers 388 kilometers of bike routes with various routes to choose from, from coastal scenery to inland trails and, of course, stops at the famous waterfalls. Krka National Park offers twelve cycling routes, three of which are for MTB riders, three for Road riders, and six trails for recreational riders that are ideal for enjoying with the family. All tracks have also been marked and are accompanied by brochures that include maps, photos, and descriptions to make them easy to navigate.

Split

Fortress of Klis

Split and its surroundings have many enticing cycling routes, but one of the most popular is the Game of Thrones trail. While you don’t need to be a fan of the TV show to enjoy this ride, it certainly helps. From the famous Riva, this 55-kilometer-long trail takes you to Antoničin mill, the Quarry in Žrnovnica, and the Klis fortress, all renowned filming locations for the TV series. You’ll also get to ride along the mouth of the Žrnovnica River, the Klis field, the Jadro River source, an ethno village, and the spectacular ancient Salona.

Another popular route in Split’s surroundings is Stara sela, which takes you from the Podstrana coast to Žrnovnica, Gornja Podstrana, down through Gornja Duće, and over to the pirate town of Omiš, with panoramic views of the entire eastern part of the Split Riviera.

Now let’s move to the islands.

Šolta

Island Solta

Šolta is known as the island of olives and honey, but cyclists may add its stunning cycling scenery to this list if they could. With terrain that can delight even the most demanding of cyclists, Šolta’s mapped routes take riders along the blue sea through olive groves, pine wooded forests, island towns, and villages, and around its mesmerizing bays. One of the most popular routes is the asphalted trail from Stomorska to Maslinica, where you can unwind at the town’s luxury Martinis Marchi marina for a drink. From unpaved roads to manicured trails, Šolta offers a route for all types of cyclists.

Brač

Vidova Gora, Island Brac

Did you know that Brač has 25 well-maintained bike trails totaling 1026 kilometers? The most demanding route is undoubtedly the St. George trail, a 180-kilometer-long ride that hits an ascent of 3814 meters. This trail starts in Supetar and takes you across the island to hit its top attractions and staggering heights, including Vidova Gora, while you’ll also get to drive through its villages and towns. And once you complete it? You receive a diploma from the Supetar Tourist Board!

Hvar

Hvar, Pakleni Isands

Hvar is one of Dalmatia’s most frequented cycling spots, with various routes mixing coastal scenery, lush hills carpeted in olive groves and vineyards, and unreal 360-degree views of the surrounding Pakleni Islands. Some hilly routes take you through its deserted rural villages like Humac and Malo Grablje, while flat roads run through its quaint coastal towns to UNESCO charms like the Stari Grad Plain. Finally, the more adventurous riders can climb to the top of Sveti Nikola, the highest peak on the island and the third-highest peak in Croatia!

Vis

Vineyard on Vis Island

Vis is a relatively unspoiled island, and while there are no marked cycling paths, the existing roads and paths are easy to follow for cyclists. You can ride around the island on a 40-kilometer-long route along the coastline through vineyards, olive groves, and towns, including Vis town, Komiža, and Rukavac. The more daring cyclists can climb up to Mount Hum, the highest peak on Vis Island, which stands 587 meters above sea level. While the ascent is steep and challenging, the views from the top are spectacular. Cycling through the island’s military history and network of underground tunnels and bunkers built during World War II is even more exciting. And we can’t forget about Stončica Bay, a picturesque cove on the island's northern coast you can reach through the village of Podselje, along a winding road that offers unmatched views of the sea and surrounding countryside.
