  • Can I Use My American Express Card in Europe?

Published by: Ema Matijas
Reading time: 2 min.

If you’re travelling from the United States to Europe, especially for a yacht charter along the Mediterranean coast, you might be wondering: can I use my American Express card in Europe? The answer is yes, but with some important limitations you should know before you travel.

Understanding how card payments work in Europe can help you avoid unnecessary stress once you’re onboard or exploring coastal towns.

IS AMERICAN EXPRESS ACCEPTED IN EUROPE?

American Express is widely used in the US, but in Europe it is not as universally accepted as Visa or Mastercard.

You can usually use Amex in:

  • In some international hotel chains
  • Some high-end restaurants and luxury venues
  • Some yacht charter companies and marinas

However, many everyday places do not accept it, especially in smaller destinations.
You may find it rejected in:

  • Local restaurants and cafés
  • Small shops and bakeries
  • Taxi services
  • Island towns and smaller coastal ports

This difference becomes more noticeable when travelling through smaller Mediterranean destinations during a yacht trip.

WHY AMEX IS LESS COMMON IN EUROPE?

The main reason is cost.

European merchants often pay higher transaction fees for American Express compared to other card networks. Because of this, many small businesses simply choose not to support it.

It’s not about security or reliability, it’s a business decision.

USING AMERICAN EXPRESS ON A YACHT CHARTER

If you’re booking a yacht charter in Europe, American Express is often accepted for:

  • Charter deposits
  • Larger advance payments
  • Bookings through agencies or brokers

However, once your trip begins, you’ll likely need alternative payment methods for day-to-day expenses.

During your yacht charter, you may need:

  • Local restaurant payments
  • Taxis and transfers
  • Small shops and provisioning stops

Even if your booking is paid by Amex, flexibility is important once you are sailing between destinations.

BEST PAYMENT SETUP FOR US TRAVELERS IN EUROPE

To avoid issues, it’s best to plan ahead with more than one payment method:

1. Bring a backup card

Carry a Visa or Mastercard alongside your American Express card. These are widely accepted across Europe.

2. Keep some cash in euros

Cash is still commonly used in smaller coastal towns, marinas, and island destinations.

3. Inform your bank

Let your card providers know your travel dates to avoid blocked transactions.

4. Don’t rely on one method

Even in luxury destinations, payment systems can vary from place to place.

WHAT TO REMEMBER

American Express cannot be used everywhere in  Europe and it shouldn’t be your only payment method, especially when travelling by yacht.

A mix of cards and some cash gives you full flexibility across marinas, restaurants, and coastal stops, ensuring your trip runs smoothly from start to finish.
