Well-connected by road, air, and sea, the city has long been known as a convenient starting point for exploring the surrounding region, meaning it's a foolproof choice for sailors traversing Istria.

Opatija, a coastal town just 18 kilometers southwest of Rijeka, is where many consider Croatian tourism launched on the coast long ago.
